Children's Book Drive Oct. 17-Nov. 18
United Way St. Croix Valley has announced a Children's Book Drive running Oct. 17 through Nov. 18. Donations of new and gently-used books for children ages birth to age six are requested. United Way St. Croix Valley will distribute the books to families in need throughout St. Croix and Pierce counties.
"Research shows the importance of reading to children at an early age. Every child needs books so United Way St. Croix Valley is collecting new and gently used books for distribution through local food pantries and other nonprofit agencies," said Executive Director John Coughlin.
"The time parents spend in simple interaction with their children, such as reading, is incredibly important in a child's development. We invite the community to join this effort," he said.
The following locations are drop sites for the United Way Book Drive:
--Associated Bank, Hudson
--Bremer Bank, New Richmond
--E.P. Rock Elementary School, Hudson

The Goals of United Way's Success By 6 Initiative are:
Encourage face-to-face contact between parents and a parent educator at prenatal classes and at the hospital following birth.
Schedule parent-child play groups and parent education classes in many communities.
Sponsor home visits by a parent educator for families needing special support.
Encourage early developmental screenings for all children.
Maintain and distribute a listing of local parenting resources and services through hospitals, clinics, service providers and online.
United Way Success By 6 is a community partnership working to ensure all children in our region have the tools and resources they need to be ready for school.
