Cats improve to 3-0
The Wildcat football team hit the 40-point mark for the third straight game to defeat Eau Claire Memorial, 40-20, in the Big Rivers Conference opener for both teams Friday night at Ramer Field.
The win moved the Cats overall record to 3-0 heading into next week's BRC contest at Chippewa Falls. The Cardinals also enter the game undefeated after beating Hudson, 14-0, Friday night.
At Ramer Field in River Falls, Levi Johnson ran for two touchdowns and Tyler Hunter and Ben Wunrow ran for one each while Sean Gilbert caught a 44-yard touchdown pass from Marty Herum as the Cats took a 40-0 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Cats were perfect in all five of their two-point conversions. After Hunter opened the scoring with a four yard run, Herum hit Eric Gilbertson to give the Cats an 8-0 lead. Johnson scored from nine yards out later in the quarter and Herum hit Will Johnson for two points to make the score 16-0.
Hunter picked off a pass at the Wildcat 20 yard line and returned it into Old Abe territory and on the very next play Herum hit Gilbert in stride for a 44-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. Johnson added the two-point conversion for a 24-0 Wildcat lead at halftime.
Wunrow scored his first touchdown of the season on a two-yard run early in the third quarter and Herum found Zach Pavlichek for the two-point conversion to make the score 32-0. Johnson added a 2-yard run with 1:08 remaining in the third quarter. A Wildcat penalty nullified Johnson's two-point run and moved the ball back to the 17 yard-line where Herum hit Gilbert in the end zone for a 40-0 lead.
Eau Claire Memorial scored all of its points in the fourth quarter with the Wildcat starters on the bench.
