Lack of rain for weeks and now scorching temperatures with heat indexes above 100 are the reason for the burn ban.

Nelson said Prescott and Hudson are also issuing burn bans.

"Unfortunately, this ban is going to extend over Labor Day weekend and beyond until we get significant rain," Nelson said.

There is a slight chance for isolated thunderstorms late Thursday afternoon and evening, Aug. 29.

Nelson said the burn ban means this: No recreational fires outside; no controlled burns; no permit-issued brush fires.

Grilling is permitted during the ban but extra caution should be taken when cooking outside. Nelson said to have a hose ready and be sure to grill on a non-combustible surface.
