Booters win 4 of 5
The Wildcat girls' soccer team won three out of four games last week before starting out this week with a 5-1 victory over Amery Monday to improve its record to 6-2 overall.
The Cats split their last two Big Rivers Conference games, losing 4-2 at Eau Claire Memorial last Tuesday and winning 2-0 Thursday at Menomonie. The split leaves them at 2-2 in BRC play heading into Thursday's home game against Rice Lake.
In the Cats' most recent win, Tara Frey scored two goals and Allie Sollom, Ella Bump and Sierra Becker scored one each in a 5-1 victory Monday over Amery.
"The whole team worked real hard to fix some of our little glitches, and I believe we made a lot of great plays that just didn't result in goals," head coach Steph Nelson said. "Madde Bump was our keeper tonight and really only touched the ball a handful of times, but we had a breakdown that resulted in Amery's goal."
There were no defensive breakdowns Saturday as the Cats defeated Superior 6-0 and New Richmond 8-0 at the River Falls Tournament.
Ashley Brown had two goals and an assist and Sollom had two goals while Ella Bump scored on a corner kick that curved into the far, high corner of the net for an unassisted goal.
Bump also assisted on a goal by Katie Berndt while Berndt and Sarah Vitale were also credited with assists in the win.
In the 8-0 win over New Richmond, Ella Bump had two goals and an assist and Berndt scored a pair of goals while Brown had a goal and an assist. Frey, Sarah Bugar and Kiley Draper also scored goals while Bailey LaPoint, Lisa Johnson and Lucy Patrick each picked up an assist.
"We got a chance to see everyone play a good amount of minutes, even getting Madde Bump out of the goal to play some defense and outside midfield," Nelson said. "We also got a chance to see people in many different positions and play around with our lineups enough to give people some confidence at unusual positions, which will become very helpful later in the season."
Madde Bump stopped every threat she faced and Vitale scored a pair of unassisted goals, one off a deflection and the other off a penalty kick, to give the Cats a 2-0 BRC victory at Menomonie Thursday.
"Menomonie did a great job with their offsides trap, which held us to the score we had," Nelson said. "Their back-up keeper played very well after the original went down in an aggressive play."
The only blemish on the Wildcats' record last week came Tuesday at Eau Claire Memorial, where Old Abes outshot the Wildcats 22-9 on their way to a 4-2 win.
"Memorial basically outplayed us end to end," Nelson said. "We had a lot of real good thoughts and moments, but Memorial capitalized on our mistakes. We had some great opportunities but we did not finish, which is something we just couldn't afford considering we were being outshot greatly. We started the second half very strong, but we just couldn't hold the momentum."
Ella Bump sprung Vitale for a breakaway goal in the 17th minute to tie the score, 1-1, in the first half. The Old Abes led 2-1 at halftime and opened a 3-1 lead before Brown scored on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute to make it a 3-2 games. Memorial made the final 4-2 with a goal about six minutes later.
