A bad start for county animals in 2011
River Falls Wisconsin 2815 Prairie Drive / P.O. Box 25 54022

The year is only 20 days old, but there have already been two notable animal cruelty cases in the county.

On Saturday, Evelyn Halvorson of River Falls reported "Thunder", her 14-year-old Arabian gelding horse was shot and killed.

According to the police report, Thunder was found next to six other horses enclosed in a pasture with woods and open land surrounding it. The Halvorsons, who live on County Highway W, believe the shooter was a coyote hunter as Thunder was shot right between the eyes with a rifle bullet.

Thunder was a gelding raised from a colt, Halvorson explained. He was traditionally ridden by her son who is now in the Army.

"He grew pretty attached to Thunder," she said.

She said Pierce County Sheriff's deputies have been on scene and the department has begun investigating the case. Halvorson said a reward is being offered for those who have any information on the case. She estimated Thunder to be between $1,000-$1,500.

The previous incident happened on Jan. 2 when Darlene Bloomstrand of Ellsworth reported three steer Holsteins belonging to her son had been slaugthered with an axe. She also said a green metal gate had been stolen as well. Bloomstrand, who lives on 750th St., gave an approximate value of $70 for the gate and $1,700 for the steers which were 12 to 15 months in age. She added the case has been forwarded onto investigators for the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.
