'Baby & Me' classes expand to nighttime
Parents and their infants can now attend the River Falls Area Hospital's free, weekly play and discussion group, Baby & Me, at night. RFAH begins offering the sessions 6-7 p.m. Thursdays from Feb. 28-May 1.
Friday morning classes that have been meeting since last July will continue. Families may join the sessions anytime.
Trained parent educators help the groups learn more about the parent-baby relationship. They cover sleep, reading baby's cues, taking care of mom, baby sign language, massage, nutrition, separation anxiety, music and other topics.
RFAH partners with the Family Resource Center of St. Croix Valley to provide the Success by 6 program, which emphasizes the importance of early childhood development. The initiative includes increased access to services and advocacy of public policies that improve families' quality of life.
The FRCSCV offers resources to parents and kids, mostly targeting families with young children, although the non-profit center does offer a teen-parent group.
Other offerings include a library of books and videos, access to bilingual educators, parent-child activities and play groups, home visits and child development screenings.
"Baby & Me classes provide positive experiences for everyone," said Family Resource Center Parent Educator Marla Butler. "Parents get together each week to learn tips for raising happier, healthier babies, share the same struggles and concerns, and discuss the joys of parenting. We've been excited about helping these parents with the most important job of their lives -- parenting that new baby."
