The next few weeks in River Falls underscore the embarrassment of creative riches we enjoy here. I'll run down some highlights, profile others in the calendar below and hope you'll rise to the occasion of these delights.

  • Friday and Saturday, April 9-10, RF Community Theatre presents the ever- popular, really entertaining One Acts with Snacks at the RF Golf Club on Division St. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., live music at 6:45, plays at 7:30. Tickets $10 at the door or at The Dish and The Spoon.
  • Saturday, April 10, 2 p.m., RF Public library: Rare opportunity to attend a reading by visiting Canadian author, Dr. Ruth Simkin from her newly published memoire, The Jagged Years of Ruthie J. In late adolescence she was sent to the world famous mental hospital Chestnut Lodge (immortalized in I Never Promised You a Rose Garden and Lilith ), with a diagnosis of epilepsy, considered a mental illness in the 1960s. With compelling style, Ruth brings to life the three years of entrapment that followed, her gritty resistance to being crushed by a forbidding system and her journey back to society, ultimately leading to a long, successful career as a physician and activist. After the reading and discussion Ruth will sign books. Everyone is welcome to stay for a reception. Free and open.
  • Thursday, April 15, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., UW-RF University Center and 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Gallery 120 (Global M.A.D.E and Interior Concepts) 120 N. Main, and Second Chances 125 N. Main, the RF Diversity Committee presents Unity in the Community , a multi-cultural celebration of our rich human tapestry. Varied offerings include a sushi class, music and dance performances, henna tattoos, a sand mandala assembled by Tibetan monks, and international culinary offerings at the University Center. Community venues feature dance, music, percussion, poetry, speakers and refreshments for purchase. All events free.
  • Saturday, April 24, 6-10 p.m. RF Community Arts Base presents the 15th Annual Spring Gala and Silent Art Auction at RF Golf Club. Talk about a community celebration! This gathering in support of CAB is sure to stimulate all your senses. In addition to the auction, there are fine art raffles, performances by swing dance band Generation 2, Chris Silver, Isis Aurora Dancers. The sumptuous appetizer buffet is catered by WestWind. Advance tickets $25 ($20 CAB members), available from CAB board members, Whole Earth Grocery, The Dish and the Spoon and me (425-2402), at the door $30 ($25 CAB members). FFI 425-7143 x2109.
  • Thursday, April 29, 7:30 p.m., UW-RF Wyman Series presents Jazz Club Cabaret with Galen Abdur-Razzaq, UC Falcon's Nest. Hot appetizers, cash bar. Tickets available now, UC information desk, adults $12, two for $20, seniors $10, students, faculty, staff, under 18, $5. 425-3911.
