The St. Croix Valley Master Gardener Association will again sponsor a "fun" contest for youth at the Pierce County Fair, to be held Aug. 9-12 in Ellsworth.

This youth plant contest is open to all youths under age 16; they need not be affiliated with 4-H or any other youth organization.

Kids can bring their biggest vegetables and flowers to be entered into the competition. There is also a category for most creative homemade scarecrow.

Contest Rules

--Open to all youth under age 16. Doesn't count toward Cloverbud and Explorer exhibit limit. Not required to be enrolled in 4-H Plant and Soil Science project.

--Exhibits are not included in fair entry form.

--Bring exhibits to the Plant and Soil Science Open Class area by 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 8 (entry day). Judging will take place after Open Class judging on Thursday. Attendance at judging is encouraged, but is not mandatory.

--All exhibits will remain until exhibit release time, Sunday at 4 p.m.

--Limit of eight entries per person--not including the scarecrow.

--St. Croix Valley Master Gardeners will sponsor first place premiums of $2.

Flower Contest Largest Flower Head

1. Dahlia

7. Snapdragon

3. Marigold

8. Sunflower Head

4. Pansy

9. Tallest Sunflower

5. Gladiolus

10. Any other large flower

Scarecrow

Scarecrow entry should be freestanding and handmade. Suggested size is two to three feet tall.
