Adelaide Devine Doty, 93
Adelaide Devine Doty, 93, of Ellsworth, died on Sept. 1, at Ellsworth Care Center in Ellsworth, Wis.
She was born on Feb. 16, 1920, the only child of Vernon and Gertrude (Young) Scheide, in Ellsworth. She grew up in Ellsworth and graduated from Ellsworth High School. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, she embarked on a 30-year career in secondary education, during which she taught a variety of subjects, from physical education to Latin, at a number of schools. She retired in 1977, after having taught English at Spring Valley High School. During her tenure, she was an award-winning forensics coach and provided a positive learning environment for hundreds of students.
Adelaide married Francis P. "Frank" Devine on August 23, 1948, at St. Francis Church in Ellsworth, and they had six children. They later divorced.
On Aug. 29, 1977, she married John A. Doty. She and John enjoyed traveling extensively with the Avion Club and spent their winters in Mesa, Ariz.
A remarkably creative woman, Adelaide enjoyed many hobbies, including knitting, crocheting, oil painting, and creating works of art out of Carolina pine needles.
Adelaide was preceded in death by her husband, John; and her former husband, Francis.
Those who survive and gratefully shared her life are her six children, Mary Devine of Eagan, Minn., Richard (Rose) Devine of Grantsburg, Joanne (Manny) Kenney of River Falls, Patty Devine of Anchorage, Alaska, Colleen Devine (Judy Nelson) of Howard Lake, Minn., and Betty Ann (Gary) Ginther of Hastings, Minn.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Pierce County Meals-on-Wheels program.
Services: Visitation was from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Hill Funeral Home in Ellsworth, Wis. Private burial followed.
