Historical Society offers activities on Mother's Day weekend

Events include Yellowstone Trail activities, Cemetery Walk and free Octagon tours for moms

The St. Croix County Historical Society is offering a variety of events on Mother's Day weekend including Yellowstone Trail activities and the Willow River Cemetery Walk on Saturday and free Mother's Day tours for mothers accompanied by a child on Sunday.

History Fair

As part of the Yellowstone Trail Heritage Days the Historical Society will present a

History Fair on the lawn of the Octagon House Museum on Saturday, May 12, from noon to 4:30 p.m. The fair is free and open to the public. Activities include a display on homesteading at Perch Lake; the voyagers; a demonstration on beekeeping; gardening demonstration with children's activity; assorted artifacts; a historic auto on display; refreshments and more.

Octagon House tours

The Octagon House Museum will be open for regular walk-in tours on Saturday from noon to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults, $3 for students and $2 for children. The 2012 "Westward to the St. Croix" theme will explore the early history of St. Croix County. Copies of books that inspired the theme will be on sale in the gift shop.

In celebration of mothers, the Octagon House Museum is once again offering free tours for mothers who are accompanied by a paying child (of any age) on Mothers' Day, Sunday, May 13, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Reservations are requested for groups of 10 or more.

Cemetery Walk

The Historical Society will present a Willow River Cemetery Walk on Saturday. Tours begin at noon and depart on the quarter hour with the last tour starting at 2:30 p.m. The cemetery is located on Ninth Street between Vine and Wisconsin streets. Admission is $7.50 for adults, $3 for students (13-18), free for children 12 and younger with an adult.

"Guiding angels" lead guest on a stroll through the cemetery to the gravesites of eight former Hudson residents where costumed actors share the life stories of the "spirits" of Hudson's past. The tour takes about 1 1/4 hours. The Pearly Gate Singers will perform traditional hymns, and guests can stop by the Humbird Chapel to see the progress of the restoration work of the Hudson Vintage Neighborhood Alliance.

Downtown walking tours

The Historical Society will also offer Downtown History Walking Tours on Sunday. The walking tours are free to the public and take about one hour. They begin at the Hudson Arch (First and Walnut streets) and depart at 11 a.m., 11:30 and noon.
