Red Brick Crafts offers new shopping option
This holiday season shoppers in the area will find one more place to find that unique one-of-a-kind gift for that hard-to-buy-for person on their list.
Red Brick Crafts near Ellsworth opened Nov. 9 and will be open until Dec. 10. Owner Heather Nelson said she finds and fixes, if necessary, a variety of items from painted jars, wooden signs and pillars, barn quilts and burlap twinkly lights. She also has Spring Valley Bakery items, hot beans and bloody mary enhancer mix for customers to purchase.
Nelson said she has wanted to have her own craft sale since she was young. She never had the space previously until her garage was built last year, providing her a place right next to her red brick house to operate her business.
"I have loved craft sales my whole life," Nelson said. "I've been going to them with my mom since I was a child."
Being a part of the community and getting to know people is an important and fun part of this new experience for Nelson. While Nelson and her family moved to Ellsworth in 2009 she now feels she is starting to get to know people.
"We have lived here for eight years and I'm finally meeting my neighbors," Nelson said. "People are absolutely thrilled to have a place like this in the area."
Nelson said it is a nice option for customers who don't want to travel 45 minutes to get to a store with unique items. And so far, she said she has had many people stop in and sold a lot of items. She said many customers have come back every weekend bringing more friends with them to see her craft store.
"There absolutely is a benefit to shopping local," Nelson said. "It stimulates the community you live in and what's more important than that? Everyone needs to help each other out."
Family support has been huge for Nelson and she said she could not have made this work without the help of her husband (Andy), two children (Noa and Mya) and her mom (Joanne Ottman).
"My husband is a very hard-working union carpenter," Nelson said, "and has been so helpful and supportive of all this and I appreciate that so much."
Nelson hopes to make Red Brick Crafts an annual event and said maybe in the future she will be open at other times of the year.
"Right now I plan on doing this sale every fall," Nelson said. "If it continues to be a success and the demand is there, I may start doing a spring/garden sale."
Red Brick Crafts will be open Thursdays 2-6 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until Dec. 10. The store is located at N5658 County Road BB, Ellsworth.
