People in the Roberts area have a new place to shop these days.

Hackman Town and Country opened at 801 Wagner Drive in Roberts on May 12.

Owners Ivan and Brenda Hackman say the store offers something for everyone - hardware, lifestyle feed, gifts, rentals, garden, paint, plumbing, electrical, auto and home.

Since moving to the community nine years ago, the Hackmans said they always felt there was a need for a hardware and general store in Roberts. Market research provided by Hardware Hank and Purina confirmed their thoughts.

"Their statistics showed that there was a need in the Village of Roberts and in a 10 to 15 mile radius for this type of business," said Brenda. "We are extremely excited about the location as it demonstrates the core of our business model which is to give excellent customer service and convenience."

The 14,200-square-foot building is located on 2.5 acres of land in the new Crane 1 development along Highway 65.

While the business is obviously named after the Hackman family, many don't know that the street it's on, Wagner Drive, also has a family connection.

The street was named after Brenda's parents, Rick and Myrna Wagner.

Myrna passed away six years ago after a long battle with cancer. When Crane 1 Developers heard about Myrna's story they agreed to honor her and Rick with the street name.

Ivan and Brenda say their store is more than just a building, rather a lifestyle which combines their past work experience with their desire to be part of a community full of wonderful people and small town values.

"We are both from small towns and wanted the relationship that you get with customers in a small family-owned business," said Brenda.

There are currently 14 employees, including Ivan and Brenda, at the store. The Hackman's say managing people is nothing new to them.

Ivan has 22 years of retail management experience with Target, and Brenda was a teacher and small business owner before earning her position as library director at the Hazel Mackin Community Library.

They feel their backgrounds in management and education will help them to "run a business that provides excellent customer service, a great working environment for employees and education to the community on many different topics and various seminars."

One way the Hackman's plan to serve their customers is by offering a variety of products and services. In addition to animal feed, lawn and garden supplies and custom paint, Hackman Town and Country is also a UPS drop off site, and sells stamps, fishing and hunting licenses and bait. "Our goal is to provide friendly employees in a beautiful and clean environment and to have a great selection of items that make it a convenient place to shop for the things you used to have to drive 10 miles for," Brenda said. "We also offer rental items that help save customers money that they aren't paying for time and gas running to Hudson or River Falls for."

Brenda said customers have already commented about how impressed they are with the store's selection of items.

"We have had many customers thank us for opening so they save not only gas but time by having us so close," she said. "One customer had a pipe break and needed a shut off valve. He said that if he had run to Hudson to get the part his basement would have been flooded. We were so thankful that we could help him and his family."

To celebrate their new business, the Hackmans are hosting a grand opening event at the store on Saturday, June 9, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition to fun activities for children, the event will also feature informational seminars and demonstrations for adults.
